Henningsvær is a small fishing village spread across a group of islands connected by bridges in the southern part of the Lofoten archipelago. It blends wild nature, traditional architecture and a unique artistic atmosphere that captures the heart of every visitor.
A bit of history
Renowned for centuries for its fishing activity, Henningsvær was once one of the most important hubs for Arctic cod fishing. For generations, boats from all over Norway would dock here to take advantage of the abundant skrei (Arctic cod), especially from January to April.
Despite its small size, Henningsvær played a significant role in the local economy as far back as the 19th century. Today, while fishing still matters, tourism and culture have become essential to the local way of life.

What to see and do in Henningsvær
Though small, Henningsvær is packed with hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Life here moves at a different pace, inviting visitors to slow down, savour the details, and connect with the authentic spirit of the Lofoten islands.
1. Stroll around the harbour and village centre
At the heart of Henningsvær is its picturesque harbour, lined with brightly painted wooden houses, old rorbu (fishermen’s cabins) converted into guesthouses, and charming local shops. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed walk, watching the boats come and go, or enjoying a coffee by the sea on a sunlit terrace.
2. Explore the art galleries and creative spaces
Henningsvær has become a renowned art hub in northern Norway. Some standout spots include:
Galleri Lofoten Hus – home to one of the largest collections of Northern Norwegian painting, particularly from the Romantic era.
KaviarFactory – a former caviar factory turned contemporary art gallery showcasing works by international artists.
You’ll also find workshops in ceramics, glass and other crafts throughout the village. Many include shops where you can purchase unique handmade pieces.
3. The iconic football field
Henningsvær Stadion is one of the most photographed places in the archipelago. Set on a rocky islet, with no stands or typical facilities, it has become a symbol of the bond between sport, nature and community. While no official matches are held here, friendly tournaments and youth activities are organised from time to time.
4. Outdoor adventures
Climbing: The area is a favourite among climbers, with granite walls offering routes for all levels.
Fishing & kayaking: Rent a kayak or join a guided trip to explore the surrounding islands by sea.
Diving & snorkelling: The cold, clear waters let you observe fish schools, seaweed forests and unique underwater landscapes—including submerged cod-drying racks.
Hiking: Several trails start or end in Henningsvær. With Kali Boat, you can even reach more remote starting points by sea, leading to breathtaking hikes (as we explain in another blog post).
